Downwinder

A point-to-point session ridden with the wind — start upwind, ride downwind, get a lift back.

Also known as: downwind run

A downwinder skips the back-and-forth of staying near one beach. You launch upwind, ride 5–30 km along the coast in the direction the wind is blowing, and arrange a car shuttle (or buddy) to bring you back.

It’s a different style of riding. You stop fighting upwind, link bumps and waves into one long flow, and cover real distance. Wing foilers and downwind SUP foilers in particular have made bump-runs into a discipline of their own — Maui’s Maliko run is the canonical example.

Logistics:

  • Check wind direction and strength for the full route, not just the launch
  • Set a turnaround / bail-out point on the map before leaving
  • Bring a phone in a waterproof pouch
  • Tell someone your route and ETA

A solo downwinder with no shuttle plan is how people end up walking 10 km back along the beach in a wetsuit.
